Nikka Single Malt Yoichi, Japan

From Yoichi Distillery on Hokkaido island, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who had trained in Scotland and sought a climate similar to the Highlands. Yoichi uses direct coal-fired pot stills, a rare production method that gives the whisky its distinctive robustness and peaty character, with stone fruits, hazelnut, gentle smoke and spice.
